This picture symbolizes the way that so many of us live our lives. We think that we see what is going on but that isn't true. We may see what is happening or not happening in our lives but most of us are completely blind to the cause.

This is my four year old grand daughter Mekenah, and her mother, my daughter Shauna. It looks like they have huge eyes, doesn’t it? The reality is that those huge eyes are just painted on. Their real eyes are closed.

This picture symbolizes the way that so many of us live our lives. We think that we see what is going on but that isn’t true. We may see what is happening or not happening in our lives but most of us are completely blind to the cause.

We usually blame other people for our problems. We say things like “It’s my parents fault! It’s my teachers fault! It’s my bosses fault! It’s the government’s fault! It’s God’s fault” etc.

Or we may blame circumstances. “If only I had a better education, were younger, were older, were prettier, were skinnier, had more money, grew up in a better neighborhood, etc.

The truth is that we do not know why we do the things we do. Or conversely, we don’t know why we do not do the things that we want to do. As a result, we keep getting results that we don’t want to have. That knowledge is buried in our subconscious or below conscious mind. And it is our subconscious mind, with it’s negative emotional conditioning, that controls us.

If you are not living, doing, being or having what you want in any area of your life; in that area, you have negative emotional conditioning that is stopping you! Until that negative emotional conditioning is eliminated, nothing is going to change in that area of your life.

In my 60 years of living, 8 years of research and 5 years of working as a stress relief specialist, the most powerful tool I have found for eliminating negative emotional conditioning is Emotional Freedom Technique, also called EFT or Tapping.

If you would like to stop being blind, remove the negative emotional conditioning, finally see clearly and move forward with your life, I invite you to learn how EFT can help you.

There are two opportunities coming up:

1. First, is a 3 hour seminar, called: “the True Cause of Your Problems and How to Eliminate Them”. The date is Wednesday, May 18th from 7 to 10 pm. The address is the Renaissance Retirement Resort at 6676 203rd St, Langley.

The Olympics and Paralympics were held in Vancouver this year and it was an interesting experience.

I am not an athlete. I’m not interested in sports at all. As a matter of fact, when my husband starts talking to me about hockey, baseball, golf, football or whatever, my eyes glaze over.

I live one hour east of Vancouver, B.C. where the Winter Olympics were held this year. The province has been preparing for this event for the last five years and I have watched, cynically, as the proposed cost of the Olympics has probably quadrupled from what we were originally told it would cost us. Our children will probably still be paying for the privilege of having the Olympics and Paralympics here.

I wasn’t the least bit interested myself. But something unusual happened. In my opinion, Canadians are usually a pretty quiet, polite, reserved people. We leave the loud, exuberate patriotism to our neighbours to the south.

But suddenly everyone around me was sporting Canadiana. Canadian flags were in windows, painted on walls, attached to cars, on people’s clothing. Everyone was talking about how many medals we had won and what events were taking place.

My seven-month pregnant daughter and her husband took their three children: age 2, 4 and 6 into Vancouver for the day to see the special Olympic exhibits. Personally, I couldn’t imagine a more awful experience than to drag three little kids through the crowds all day while being seven months pregnant.

But I guess all the hoopla finally got to me. I decided that I would probably never again have the opportunity to participate in the Olympics. If I didn’t at least go into Vancouver and see some of the sights, I would regret it.

So, on the last Saturday of the Olympics (probably the worst time to go), in the rain, my husband and I drove part way in and then took the Sky Train into Vancouver. We had our picture taken in the Luge sled. I stood beside a First Nations man dressed in his ceremonial outfit and posed beside a statue of flying eagles.

Most of the time, we just walked around the city, in the rain. We walked from one venue to another, saw the two to four hour lineups for each one and decided we really didn’t want to see it that badly. Then we came home. But we went!

I watched my husband and son-in-law almost have heart attacks as the Canadian and American hockey team went into overtime, vying for the Gold – and Canada won! And I watched the closing ceremonies on TV.

I thought a lot about why events like the Olympics and Paralympics are so popular and I think the picture of the bird flying on the back of the eagle gives the reason. For a few days, we, the general public, get to rid on the backs of eagles. Their successes become our successes! Their Gold becomes our Gold. They are an inspiration to us.

There are many other eagles in our lives. Sometimes parents or grandparents. Sometimes teachers or coaches, political or social personalities will say or do something that will inspire us to try harder or be better. Think of the number of people that Oprah has helped to lift their vision.

I don’t remember who said it but I remember a quotation: “It is better to aim for the stars and drag your feet through the treetops than it is to aim for the treetops and drag your feet through the mud”.

Thank God for the eagles that help us see farther, try harder and fly higher than we would without their help!

If you are having a problem trying to be, do or have what you want in your life, it could be that there is hidden negative emotional conditioning that is holding you back. I can help you eliminate those, so that you can become an eagle and experience the thrill of flying yourself!

A potential new client sent me an email the other day. One of the things she said really struck me. She said that before she’d heard about me she was just “killing time til she died.”

I guess the reason it hit me so hard is that is exactly what my mother did. My mother was a bitter, unhappy woman for most of her life. For the last ten years of her life, she was practically a recluse. She would get up at six in the morning and drink coffee, smoke cigarettes and play Solitaire until 2:00 pm.

Then it was happy hour. The coffee pot would be put away and she would drink whisky, smoke cigarettes and read pocket books until she went to bed at 7:00 pm. That was her life until she willed herself to death at the age of 68. What a tragedy!

In the five years that I have been working as a stress relief specialist, I have learned that my mother was not unique. There are a great many people out there who have given up on life. Who think that there is no hope, so why bother trying any more.

So they numb their pain with a variety of addictions. Or they bury it and pretend that everything is all right. But it isn’t. Nor will it ever be – until they eliminate the negative belief systems that are causing them to feel this way.

I call it emotional mud and I was covered in it at one time in my life. But I learned of a wonderful soap that would wash away emotional mud. It is called Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT or Tapping.

With the help of a skilled EFT practitioner and my own efforts, I was able to wash away my own emotional mud. I was then free to reclaim my own personal power, restore my own peace and happiness and start rebuilding my life – the way I wanted it to be! I have never been happier or felt more fulfilled.

If you are just “killing time til you die”, there is hope and there is help. You can either have private, individual coaching with me, where we will focus completely on helping you eliminate those negative belief systems that are keeping you from having, doing or being what you want in life.

Or you can take one of my “Bliss and Balance for Life” two-day Release Events, where I will help you learn how to apply EFT to resolve your problems. Just go to my website at www.SherylStanton.com and click on the “Events” tab to learn when they are being held.

It is the time of year when many people make New Year's Resolutions. "This is the year", they say, "when I am finally going to .... " You fill in the blank: quit smoking, stop drinking, lose weight, get fit, work less, spend more time with my family, etc. Unfortunately, on average, about 80% of those same people will have quit making the effort and gone back to the same old, same old, before January 20th. Why do you suppose that is?

It is the time of year when many people make New Year’s Resolutions. “This is the year”, they say, “when I am finally going to …. “ You fill in the blank: quit smoking, stop drinking, lose weight, get fit, work less, spend more time with my family, etc.

Unfortunately, on average, about 80% of those same people will have quit making the effort and gone back to the same old, same old, before January 20th. Why do you suppose that is?

There are lots of articles on how to keep your New Year’s Resolutions and just as many articles written about why most people fail to keep them. But I’ve never read an article that gives what I think is the main reason for the failures.

I believe the real reason we go back to what we were doing before is because there is an emotional payoff for doing it. We get something from it; otherwise we wouldn’t be doing it.

I don’t drink or smoke, so I can’t identify with that but I do know about my New Year’s Resolutions to lose weight. So I will use that as an example.

I was an emotional eater. Whenever I got stressed or upset, I would go to the fridge or the store. And it was never celery or carrot sticks that I wanted. It was rich, creamy carbs that I craved; especially chocolate.

When I would eat chocolate, I would calm down and feel better. Chocolate was rich and delicious and comforted me. I didn’t eat it all the time but when I got stressed, I would binge. I would eat three of the large chocolate bars at one time, or a whole bag of chocolate chips. One time I ate a one pound solid chocolate bunny – and had the world’s worst migraine headache!

So, even though I was packing on the pounds and hating how I looked, I still continued to eat. Why? Because it made me feel better! There was an emotional payoff that I was getting.

I was in my 50′s before I learned about the negative belief systems I’d had all of my life. I learned that they were what caused me to feel unhappy, unsatisfied and unfulfilled.

As I was able to eliminate these destructive belief systems, I noticed an interesting side effect. I lost almost 50 pounds within 7 months! And it was easy! Because I felt good about myself, I no longer needed the emotional comfort that I got from eating chocolate.

I believe this emotional payoff is why so many diets fail. A person may have the willpower and discipline to get the weight off. But unless they have eliminated the underlying reason that caused them to put the weight on in the first place, they will just gain it back again. That is why we see so many yo-yo dieters. They lose the weight and then gain it back again, multiple times.

Let’s transfer now to smoking. What usually happens when people stop smoking? They gain weight! Why? Because they still have the underlying emotional problem they were using cigarettes to pacify. Only now they are using a different pacifier: food.

I think people are failing to solve their problems because they are starting at the wrong end. Instead of trying to eliminate the comfort “whatever it is”, they should work on eliminating the emotional problem that is causing them to comfort themselves.

The tool that first opened my eyes to the negative belief systems I had was Emotional Freedom Technique (also called EFT or Tapping). It was also EFT that helped me to eliminate the emotional problems I had because of them.

EFT made a world of difference in my own life. For the five years that I have been working as a stress relief specialist, I have seen it create miracles in the lives of my clients.

If you are really serious about keeping your New Year’s Resolution this year, you might want to consider eliminating the cause first. When the cause is gone, the symptom (smoking, drinking, overeating, workaholism, whatever) will also disappear.

What have you got to lose? What do you want to gain? What you want is possible, if you start at the beginning, instead of the end.

I can help you do that!

Look at this baby. See the sad, questioning eyes and the quivering lips? Can you see that the baby is covered in mud and is unhappy about it? That unhappy baby is covered in "Emotional Mud". Just like the baby, each one of us has some "Emotional Mud" on our spirit.

What is “Emotional Mud” and how do we get it?

As a baby, we were happy, confident, courageous, positive and loving. But something happened. Most of us lost that. Today, less than 1 in 5 women feel good about themselves!

We were all raised by imperfect people who were trying to deal with their own “stuff”. They may, or they may not have done the best they could, but each one of us was splashed with our own ”Emotional Mud”.

If we came from an abusive home, the emotional mud was dumped on our spirits. If we came from a good home, it was dripped on.

Small children do not see their parents as individuals; with their own wants and needs. They do not realize that their parent is sick or worried or tired. All they see is that their “God” at that age, is angry or unhappy.

And they interalize it as their fault. They are not good enough. There must be something wrong with them. They are bad. They don’t deserve to be treated well.

This “Emotional Mud” becomes the basis of the child’s belief system; who they think they are and what they think they deserve to have in life. For the rest of their life, they will attract to themselves people and experiences that will validate their belief system, no matter how wrong or harmful it is.

This “Emotional Mud” belief system is subconscious (below conscious awareness). This means that we are not aware that it is there but it controls every aspect of our lives – usually negatively.

This is why we do things we don’t want to do. Or why we don’t do things we do want to do. Why we keep getting results we don’t want to have, no matter how hard we try.

And we will continue this behavior all through our adult life - until we become aware of our “Emotional Mud” belief system and wash it off.

Think of your own childhood and then think of what is happening in your life right now. If you are having a problem in any area of your life; in that area you have an “Emotional Mud” negative belief system. Your life will never improve (in that area) until you wash away the emotional mud.

And it can be easily done – if you use the right kind of soap! I can show you the right kind of soap to use to wash away “Emotional Mud”.

As I was walking along a forest path a couple of days ago, I saw an amazing thing. It was snowing – in July! White puffy flakes were falling from the sky, while the sun was shining!

On the ground, was a layer of white. Of course, it was cottonwood seed time and instead of snow flakes, the sky and the ground was full of cotton wood seeds.

I noticed something interesting about the way the seeds were falling to the earth. In the sheltered areas, the seeds gently floated to the ground. But in the open areas, the seeds were blown in every direction by the wind.

I thought of how little control the cottonwood seeds had as to what their final destination was going to be. I looked at the seeds all around me. Some landed in the river beside the path and were drowned. Some landed on the gravel pathway, where they were wasted. Some landed in the trees. Some were lucky enough to land on fertile ground, where they could germinate and become what they were meant to be – new cottonwood trees.

The cottonwood tree takes into account that most of its seeds will be wasted and creates millions of seeds.

Then I thought about people and how many of them are just like the cottonwood seeds. They are being blown about by every wind or influence that comes into their lives. They have no sense of direction or purpose and seem to fall into their lives by accident. The big difference between us and the cottonwood tree, is that we only have one life to live.

Look at your own life. Are you living the life that you thought you would? Did you purposefully choose to do what you are doing now?

Fortunately for us, unlike the cottonwood seed, if we don’t like where we’ve landed, we can move and change. We don’t have to stay in stressful situations and suffer problems with our health, relationships and finances.

This is usually subconscious or below the awareness part of our mind, so we might not even know we are doing it. However, we do know that no matter how badly we may want to change, we never seem to be able to do it.

Do You Remember What a Push Me-Pull You Is?

In the movie, Dr. Doolittle, a man who could talk to the animals, was sent a very unique animal, called a Push Me – Pull You. It had two heads and two

sets of front legs. When one half wanted to move forward, the other half would have to move backward. This caused a lot of confusion and disharmony.

Most of the time, the animal just stood still.

What is the Push Me-Pull You Syndrome?

Just like the animal, many of us have two parts that are fighting each other. One part wants to make a change in our lives. The other part is getting a pay-off or reward for continuing the behavior and doesn’t want to change. It will usually sabotage our efforts.

This is usually subconscious or below the awareness part of our mind, so we might not even know we are doing it. However, we do know that no matter how badly we may want to change, we never seem to be able to do it.

How Do We Know If We Have the Push Me-Pull You Syndrome?

Just think of the things that you want to do or feel you have to do or need to do. Those are the “Push Me” parts of the syndrome. Some examples could be:

I want to lose weight

I need to get a better job

I have to go to school

I want to be a better parent

I need to be a better ….(fill in the blank)

The “Pull Me” part of the syndrome would be whatever reasons you are using for not doing the “Push Me” part.

For “I want to lose weight” - then men might hit on me and I might not be safe

For “I need to get a better job” – but they will find out I’m not good enough to do the job

For “I have to go to school” – but what if I’m not smart enough to do the work; what will people think if I fail

For “I want to be a better parent” – I’m not a good person, what do I know about being a good parent

For “I need to be a better….” – but I’m not good enough, smart enough, don’t deserve to have a better —, can’t do it, etc. etc. etc.

Do you get the idea?

What is an example of the Push Me-Pull You Syndrome?

Any time we want to make a change but are not doing it can show the Push Me-Pull You syndrome. Where it is most obvious is when we are trying to change an addiction.

I am going to use the addiction to food as an example because it is the drug of choice for most people. It is also the addiction that I am the most familiar with. The three times in my life when I was overweight were very unhappy times for me.

I used food as a source of comfort – the only comfort I could find at the time. And it was not celery and carrot sticks that comforted me. It was rich, creamy, carbohydrate, sweet and fatty food.

Why do we sabotage our efforts to change?

Because there is a pay-off. We get something out of what we are doing. In my case, I got comfort from eating.

One of my clients was addicted to chocolate. Emotionally to her, chocolate meant love. She was not about to give that chocolate up, without a fight. That is why we sabotage. We perceive what we have as being more valuable, in the moment, than what we want, in the future.

It is just like the small child who is offered a sucker now or an ice cream sundae later. We will choose the sucker now because we need it now and can’t see that waiting will give us something better.

Remember that this all happens at a subconscious level. Consciously, we want to lose weight or get a better job or whatever the “Push Me” part of us is saying. But subconsciously, where all of our decisions are really made, the “Pull Me” part of us is saying that we do not believe that the pay off will be better than what we are getting now.

How do you eliminate the Push Me-Pull You Syndrome?

The most powerful tool I have found, and what worked for me, is Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. It helped me first to become aware of the negative belief systems (the Pull You) that were controlling my life.

Then it helped me to break that negative conditioning and remove my need for artificial comfort. I lost almost fifty pounds and have kept it off for almost two years now.

If you would like to learn how to use EFT to eliminate the negative conditioning or “Pull Yous” that are keeping you stuck, I can help you!

But more important, I am a Stress Conqueror. I know what it is like to suffer from unrelieved stress. I got sick with a stress-related illness that put me in bed for three months. Western medicine could do nothing to help me and I was told that I would have to accept a limited lifestyle at the age of 45.

This was not something I was willing to do. I studied Complementary Health and Energy Healing for eight years. I got my health back! More important, I got my life back! And I learned what to do to make sure it never happens again. Now, I share that information with others.

Having the Olympics in my own back yard (I live in Mission, just one hour east of Vancouver), started me thinking about the times I've gone for my own "Gold" and the number of times that I've failed. I worked very hard at some of those businesses and spent a lot of money I didn't have, trying to make them successful. So why weren't they?

I had all of the information - but there was no transformation! I should have been making money hand over fist. But an interesting thing kept happening. I would start to succeed and then I would start to sabotage. I had no idea why.

Now I know why. I had a negative belief system about my ability to succeed. I had no idea it was there but it affected everything I tried to do in life.

The Winter Olympics took place in Vancouver, BC this year. Athletes from all over the world have come to compete for the coveted “Gold” medallion; showing that they are the best in the world at their sport.

Having the Olympics in my own back yard (I live in Mission, just one hour east of Vancouver), started me thinking about the times I’ve gone for my own “Gold” and the number of times that I’ve failed. I’ve tried a number of different businesses: home party plans; network marketing, commodity trading, various sales jobs, management positions, etc. Also, I’m a registered nurse by profession and still work part time as a nurse.

I worked very hard at some of those businesses and spent a lot of money I didn’t have, trying to make them successful. So why weren’t they? There are many reasons: some good, some bad. For some of them, the timing wasn’t right. For some, I became disillusioned with the company or I decided that this was not what I wanted to do with my life. However, with a couple of businesses I gave everything I had, trying to make them successful. I put in the time, the effort and the money. I attended the sales training and motivational courses. I was taught by some of the motivational gurus of our time: Bob Proctor, Brian Tracey, Steven Covey. I did the Fire Walk with Tony Robbins!

I had all of the information – but there was no transformation! I should have been making money hand over fist. But an interesting thing kept happening. I would start to succeed and then I would start to sabotage. I had no idea why.

Now I know why. I had a negative belief system about my ability to succeed. I had no idea it was there but it affected everything I tried to do in life. I believed that I could not succeed; that I didn’t deserve to be successful; that I was a failure. And I had to be true to that belief system, no matter how untrue or negative it was. So every time I started to succeed, I found myself out of my comfort, or not comfortable but familiar, zone. I then unknowingly, started to sabotage my efforts, so that I could get back to where I subconsciously believed I belonged.

Each of us has a belief system about ourselves, usually instilled in our early childhood, before the age of awareness or understanding. For many of us, that belief system is negative. It was not instilled deliberately in most cases. Our parents were going through their own “stuff” and couldn’t give us what they didn’t have themselves. They did the best they knew how with the level of awareness and understanding they had at the time. But for many of us, our self esteem was damaged and we grew up with a negative belief system about ourselves.

How do you know if you have a negative belief system? Just look at the quality of your life: physically, socially, emotionally, financially, in your relationships or performance, etc. If there are problems, you have a negative belief system in that area. The problems will not be eliminated until you change that negative belief, because you have to be true to your belief system.

Although we are not responsible for creating them, we are responsible for continuing to live by them. Our parents may have “done it to us” but when we move away, we continue to do it to ourselves.

Once we stop blaming our parents, other people or circumstances for our problems and accept that we are responsible for what we do with the rest of our lives, the exciting news is that we can then develop the power to break that negative conditioning. We can create a better, more affirming belief system and finally be free to do, have or be what we want!

If you are ready to make a change in your life, I can help you do it.
